Hector the Protector and As I Went Over the Water
By Maurice Sendak
I picked up this gem for a mere RM6 at a secondhand bookstore, but I would have paid many times more for it as Maurice Sendak is one of my favourite picture book authors/illustrators. Here are two wonderful titles in one edition. They are, as the title suggests, nursery rhymes, most imaginatively illustrated by Sendak. It's amazing how he has spun two very energetic adventures out of a handful of words. If I didn't know better I'd swear the stories told by his pictures are what the original makers of these rhymes had in mind in the first place. The heroes of both tales remind me of Max from "Where the Wild Things Are" - cocky, impulsive, good-humoured little things, with bad tempers and good hearts. The beasts here are also reminiscent of the monsters in that other book - furry, fearful, sharp-toothed and soft-pawed. This book has been re-issued by the publishers in hardback and is priced much higher than RM6, but worth every sen!
