Just think of all the reasons why animals shouldn't wear clothes. The writer and illustrator of this book certainly have! Imagine a sheep in a jumper ... wouldn't it get too hot? How about a hen in trousers ... would it make egg-laying difficult? The upside down opossums are sweet. And the elephant in a dress and hat reminds me of a family friend, which, as the Barretts point out, could be very, very embarrassing ...!

Costa Awards 2006

The four books shortlisted for The Costa Children's Books Awards (formerly known as The Whitbread Awards) are:

Clay (Hodder Children’s Books) by David Almond

The Diamond of Drury Lane (Egmont Press) by Julia Golding

Just in Case (Puffin) by Meg Rosoff

Set in Stone (David Fickling Books) by Linda Newbery

The only one I have read is Just In Case and I thought it was amazing so of course it deserves to win, hands down.

The results will be announced on 7th January 2007 and the overall winner (there are five categories, the others being Novel, First Novel, Biography, Poetry) on 7th February.

Having a Ball with Books

Last week, I met and interviewed Tom Palmer, an author who develops and works on reader development programmes in the UK.

One of the things Palmer does is promote reading through football.

I attended a workshop conducted by him at the National Library and was inspired! My friend and I are hoping to launch a community library next year and I'm really looking forward to the workshops and programmes that we'll be able to run there.
