Nicholas was written by Rene Goscinny (1926-1977), the author of the Asterix comics (with illustrator Albert Uderzo) and illustrated by Jean-Jacques Sempe (1932). It is the first of a series of five books about the adventures and misadventures of a French schoolboy. First published in 1959, it was released in English, by Phaidon, in 2005.
The following illustrations are from that edition. (Click on the thumbnails for bigger versions of the pictures):
Chapter 1, pg 4: A Photograph to Treasure: "When we got to school this morning we were all feeling pleased because we were going to have a class photograph taken and it would be a memento for us to treasure all our lives, like our teacher said, and she told us to be sure we were neat and clean and we'd brushed our hair."
Chapter 7, pg 44: Jocky: "He put up his fists and started dancing round Eddie like the boxers on Matthew's television."
Chapter 10, pg 67: Louise: "Louise is great! We'll get married when we're grown up. She kicks a really fantastic goal."
Chapter 15, pg 97: I am Sick: "I felt fine yesterday; you can tell I did, because I ate a whole lot of caramels and candies and cakes and fries and ice cream, and then in the middle of the night, I can't think why, I was very sick, just like that."
Chapter 19, pg 123: Running Away from Home: "I'm running away from home! I was playing in the living room, being very good, and just because I'd spilt a bottle of ink on the new carpet Mom came along and told me off."
