RABBITS and numbats are used in this allegory about colonization that emphasises the history of Australia and the experiences of its indigenous people. Shaun Tan's cover art is based on E. Phillips Fox's painting, Landing of Captain Cook at Botany Bay, while the rest of his illustrations use abstract symbols to depict the exploitation and domination of the land and its original inhabitants. The Rabbits is a haunting and sobering reminder of man's greed and cultural insensitivity.
